Mathematics and Computer Science Courses:

To obtain PA Secondary Certification, students must take a course in the History of Mathematics, in Geometry and in Probability and Statistics. Thus, it is recommended that students take at least some of the following as some of the 5 required MAT electives:

The PA Secondary Certification requirements may also be met by taking (using the new course numbers):

With permission of the Department Chair and the Program Director, students may take one or more of these three MED courses as an undergraduate and use the credits to satisfy the requirements for MAT electives for the BS in Mathematics degree. If students have more than the required 40 courses for the BS degree, students may take these MED courses as an undergraduate and use the credits to satisfy the requirements for the MS in Mathematics Education degree. Or students may take these courses during their 5th year and use them to satisfy the requirements of the MS degree.

Education Courses (to be taken during the undergraduate years):
  • PSY 1001 Introductory Psychology
  • EDU 1011 Schools in Society (plus EDU 1012 Certification Lab I)
  • EDU 2031 Educational Psychology (plus EDU 2032 Certification Lab II)
  • SPE 2111 Education of the Special Learner
  • EDU 2311 Reading in the Content Areas

It is possible to take one or both of the last two courses during the summer and/or fall of the 5th year as SPE 4805 and EDU 4105 and use the credits toward the MS requirements.

Mathematics Education Courses (to be taken during the 5th year):
  • Summer (9 credits total)
    • MED 4215/4225 Research in Mathematics Education (3 or 6 credits) or MED 4315/4325 Research in Mathematics (3 or 6 credits)
    • MED or EDU graduate electives (3 or 6 credits)

  • Fall (13 credits total)
    • MED 4145 Instructional Techniques in Mathematics (3 credits)
    • MED 4146 Secondary Pedagogy for Mathematics Lab (1 credit) (cross-listed with EDU 4155/4156 Practical Issues in Secondary Mathematics)
    • MED or EDU graduate electives (9 credits)

  • Spring (9 credits total)
    • EDU 4225 Secondary Fieldwork (student or intern teaching) (6 credits)
    • MED or EDU graduate elective (3 credits)

With permission of the Department Chair and the Program director, students may take MED courses as an undergraduate and use the credits to satisfy general elective requirements for the BS in Mathematics degree. (MED courses do not satisfy MAT requirements except as noted above.) If students have more than the required 40 courses for the BS degree, students may take the MED courses as an undergraduate and use the credits to satisfy the requirements for the MS in Mathematics Education degree. The MS in Secondary Mathematics Education requires a minimum of 30 graduate credits beyond the BS degree requirements.

Students receiving the MS in Secondary Mathematics Education degree are required to take a minimum of four MED courses, which must be approved by the Program Director.
