Here is Mr. Tom Foley's own account of how it all started:

I have taught over 7,000 students over 49 years! My first day on campus, then Saint Joseph’s College (SJC), was Saturday 17, March 1954. The reason for my visit was to take an entrance exam to major in Physics as a co-op student in the Electronic Physics Program. I came, I saw, and I never left SJC-SJU!

Majoring in Physics in those days meant that you also minored in Mathematics. In June, 1958, John S. O’Conor, S.J., the Chair of the Math and Physics Department, offered me a faculty position as an instructor to teach Mathematics and Physics, based on the recommendation of several Math and Physics professors I had in class, as well as the recommendation of the Dean of the College, Matthew G. Sullivan, S.J.

In the mid-1950s until mid-1960, many similar hires were made in the college. I earned my M.S. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961 (in Physics) and my A.B.D. status from Bryn Mawr College (in Physics) in 1976.

I met my wife, Adele, in 1967 at an all day Saturday Philosophy lecture series on Existentialism (I still do not understand what it is today. The same can be said about my understanding of Quantum Mechanics).

We have one child, Tommy, who is a Penn State Graduate. He roots for PSU in football, but is loyal to SJU in basketball. I have two wonderful grandchildren, Thomas Luke (5 years old) and Allison Bethany (2 1/2 years old).

I have worked with some wonderful students, faculty, and staff over my 49 years at SJU. God bless them ALL! He has blessed me!
